03 May Choosing the Right Floor Plan for Your New Home
Building a new home is an exciting adventure that begins with selecting the right floor plan. There are so many options and factors to consider when choosing a floor plan, and you will want to be sure that the floor plan you choose will fit in with your lifestyle and how you and your family will use your home. We understand that this can be an overwhelming process but here are some things to keep in mind when choosing a layout for your home.
Special Interest Rooms – By identifying the needs of your family, you will be able to decide if you need any special interest rooms. After bedrooms and bathrooms, you may determine that you would like to have an exercise space, hobby room or home office. Perhaps you would like to finish the basement for a movie theatre or a guest bedroom – the possibilities are endless – but when it comes to choosing a floor plan, keep in mind special interest rooms you would like to add to your new space.
Functional Spaces – Although functional spaces take a backseat to the more exciting rooms, they are equally as important. Think about spaces including mudrooms, storage rooms, laundry rooms, and bathrooms, since these are the rooms that you access day in and day out. Make sure your floor plan provides ample room and prime locations for these spaces.
The Overall Flow – Once all the rooms you need and desire have been identified, imagine yourself moving from room to room, beginning at the front door to see which rooms should be where. Depending on your lifestyle you may choose to have secluded bedrooms for children away from the main living space, a large foyer with space for shoes and bags or an open-concept space for entertaining friends and family.
Fitting Your Furniture – If you have furniture that you plan to bring with you to your new home, ensure that you examine it to see how it would fit best into your desired floor plan. Furniture such as your favorite chair, a piano, or bedroom set should be taken into consideration. You don’t want to move into your home and discover that you need to buy all new furniture because what you have doesn’t fit.
Think About The Future –Although you can’t predict the future, you can imagine what your life will look like over the next 5 to 10 years. Consider how your family will change and grow over the next 10 years and how it will affect your home’s layout. A flexible plan allows you to convert spaces as needed for changes. A playroom can become a bedroom when another child is born or a home office with adjoining bathroom can be turned into a suite for overnight guests. Planning for the future ensures you will love your home for years to come.
