Homes of the Future

Homes of the Future

Home automation and smart homes are becoming a thing not of the future, but of right now. Have you ever wondered “What will bathrooms look like in the future?” or “What kind of gadgets will be in the kitchen?” As technology advances and lifestyles change, the homes we live in will begin to change too, creating “homes of the future”. As mentioned before, we are already starting to see these changes in our homes today. From basic light and appliance control to automated blinds and home security, this technology makes life more convenient and saves energy.

At Cardello Architects, we work with homeowners to add new technology and energy-efficient products into their renovations or new home designs. Technology has come so far and is still growing. It is improving everyday life and providing the ability to control almost every aspect of our home. Home automation is something that needs strict attention to detail from the very beginning. Our team is here to help you work out each detail throughout the planning process.

Smart Homes

Here’s a look at certain aspects “homes of the future” have:

Type of Interface – The first thing to consider when designing a smart home is what kind of interface is going to be necessary. It is the most crucial requirement in a home automation system as it is the nervous system that connects all communication between devices and the user. Depending on how you want your smartphone to operate, there are quite a few details to consider. For instance, if you want to control home appliances through the internet, designers need to add an ethernet/wifi interface to connect the system to the home network.

iPads and iPhones – We are now controlling everything with iPads and iPhones. Between the lights, heat, shades, alarms, and security cameras, everything is right at your fingertips. The key here is knowing that you want to control everything via Bluetooth from the start because it will require a compatible interface.

Smart Mirrors – Smart mirrors look just like a TV and include a touch screen that takes you to the weather, time, calendar and breaking news. They are voice activated and linked up to Siri, or Alexa. They can even be changed from the shower without having to get out. When they are off, they are purely reflective. They are an aesthetic and convenient addition to any smart home.

Thermostats – These can be controlled through your smartphone and some are even voice-controlled and pre-programmed with a wide list of commands delivering the right temperature when you need it.

Showers – Showers can now be activated by your voice using Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant. Your shower length can be set, as well as started and paused to save water, and set at a certain temperature. You can even get a notification on your device when your shower is ready.

Light Bulbs– Companies are coming out with special light bulbs that adjust to the time of day on its own. The bulb changes colors when temperature changes throughout the day to better match the color of light that the sun is emitting. A cloudy day at 12pm versus a sunny day at 12pm would offer two completely different light emissions.

Green Systems – Reducing your carbon footprint is important, so products are being installed in homes to become environmentally friendly. This includes adding solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems, and more. Products may be installed to save and preserve water to recirculate and recycle water throughout the home.

Alarm Security – These products allow homeowners to be more secure and safe at home with security and the prevention of bursting pipes or break-ins while on vacation. Alarm systems may notify homeowners if something is wrong.
